Vancouver Island Marmot Predation
The Vancouver Island marmot is a critically endangered large rodent that only exists on Vancouver Island, just off the coast of British Columbia, Canada. A primary source of mortality of these marmots is predation, thought to be mainly by wolves and mountain lions.
We are conducting molecular analyses on forensic samples from predated marmot remains to confirm species of predator responsible. This information will be important when quantifying the risk that these predator species, and possibly others, will pose to Vancouver Island marmot population persistence.
